Controls – Java

Locked Controls: Keyboard

  • Esc – Exits to menu, exits out of open GUI like inventory
  • Ctrl + B – Toggles narrator.
  • F1 – Toggles HUD (Heads Up Display), pair with F2 to take a screenshot with HUD
  • F3 – Toggles information about the world you are in, like the snapshot/version of Minecraft you are playing(1.0.-1.21.2) and your coordinates on the world. It also shows other debug information, such as your FPS (Frames Per Second), shows and available memory. If you press #1-9 while in debug screen you get a more detailed view of the graph on the write. If you press 0 it becomes less detailed. Hold shift before F3 to show profiler graph.
  • F3 + Q shows all F3 shortcuts.
  • F3 + A reloads all chunks.
  • F3 + T while holding F3 reloads all textures, sounds and web-loaded client resources, which is useful for resource pack authors.
  • F3 + P toggles the auto-pause when the window loses focus.
  • F3 + H toggles detailed item descriptions.
    Shows tool and armour durability as a fraction on damaged items
    Displays the zoom level of a map
  • F3 + C copies the player’s coordinates and rotation as a ‘/tp’ command.
  • Holding F3 + C for at least 6 seconds triggers a manual debug crash on purpose after the keys are released.
  • F3 + B toggles showing the hitbox around entities.
  • F3 + D clears chat history (including previously typed commands).
  • F3 + N switches the player’s game mode between the previous game mode and Spectator.
  • F3 + G shows the chunk boundaries immediately surrounding the player.
  • F3 + Esc pauses the game without bringing up the pause menu.
  • F3 + F4 brings up the game mode changer menu.
  • F3 + L begins a ten-second recording, which captures information such as tick durations and used heap sizes.
  • F3 + S dumps contents of dynamic textures and font textures to screenshots/debug/.
  • F5 – When the F5 key is pressed while on the multiplayer screen, it refreshes the server list.
  • Shift – When the inventory is open, shift +  clicking on an item or stack moves it between the inventory and the hot bar. Shift +  clicking on a piece of armour/wearable item transfers it to it’s armour slot if empty
  • Shift +  clicking on a shield moves it between the inventory and the off-hand slot.
  • Shift – Shift clicking (holding shift and pressing left click) transfers items in slot to top of inventory/container to hot bar back and forth
  • When a crafting table is open, shift +  clicking an item or stack in the inventory moves it into the 3×3 crafting grid. The slots are filled from left to right and then top to bottom.
  • When any type of furnace is open, shift +  clicking an item or stack in the inventory moves it into the input (upper left) slot of the furnace. Items that can serve as fuel move to the fuel (lower left) slot.
  • When crafting, shift +  clicking the crafting output automatically crafts the maximum number of that item for the materials being used (up to one stack), and moves all crafted items to the inventory.
  • In the survival inventory tab of the creative inventory, shift +  clicking ‘X’ clears the whole inventory. In any other tab, shift +  clicking an item puts a stack onto the hot bar.
  • When in the Multiplayer server selection menu, shift + up arrow and shift + down arrow moves a server name to a specific position.
  • Holding shift while a server name is selected and left clicking another server name causes them to swap.

Locked Controls: Mouse

  • Left Click – Pick up all items in one slot from inventory to be moved, evenly splits stack when dragged across inventory, double click to put the same items split up into one slot
  • Right Click – Pick up half the items from slot to be moved, drops one item from selected stack in inventory
  • Scroll wheel – Moves through hot bar slots, scrolls through chat
  • Mouse movement – Camera movement, aiming, moves cursor when inventory is opened

Limited Controls:

  • Sprint (secondary) – Quickly pressing ‘W’ twice when moving forward allows for another way to sprint

Changeable Controls: Keyboard

  • F2 – Takes a screenshot
  • F5 – Toggles view (1st and 3rd person)
  • F11 – Toggles fullscreen
  • #1-9 – Select hot bar slots from left to right
  • W – Move forward
  • A – Strafe left
  • D – Strafe right
  • S – Move backwards
  • Space bar – Jump
  • Left shift – Crouch
  • Left control – Sprint
  • Q – Clicking this while holding an item or block in the player’s hand will ‘throw’ the item 2-3 blocks away from the player, this is different to ‘throwing’ and enderpearl, egg etc. because to do that the player uses those items to throw them and they get thrown further
  • E – Opens and closes your inventory/closes GUIs open
  • F – Swaps items between what the player holds out in their off hand and main hand
  • X – Pressing ‘X’ and #1-9 will bring up one of the 9 saved toolbars (creative)
  • C – Pressing ‘C’ and #1-9 will save the current tool bar under the number pressed (creative)
  • Tab – Holding ‘Tab’ will show the players online in a multiplayer world/server
  • T – Opens the chat function
  • / – Opens a command to be typed in
  • P – Blocks messages from being received from someone in chat, resets upon rejoining
  • L – Opens the advancements menu
  • Unbound (choose keybind) – Highlights players in spectator mode
  • Unbound – Toggles the cinematic camera (smooth movement)

Changeable Controls: Mouse

  • Left click – Clicking this will attack creatures, holding over a block will break the block
  • Right click – Clicking this places down a block, uses items and opens some blocks’ menus like chests and furnaces to use
  • Scroll wheel – In creative, clicking this while looking at an item, creature or block gives you it in item form, also in creative clicking this over a block/item in your inventory gives you a stack of it
